Current Research

Professor Dave Westerman on a 2005 spring break trip to UtahThe oldest part of my research career concerns the structural and tectonic history of the Appalachian Mountain belt, particularly the parts on the western edge in Vermont and the eastern edge in downeast Maine. More recently, the primary focus of my research has been studying the origin and emplacement histories of granitic rocks. Most of my work in this area is done in the Tuscan Province of Italy where I’ve been working since 1990 with colleagues from the University of Pisa and the Institute of Geochemistry and Geochronology. You can see some of my papers on this subject.

I have to confess, though, that I do a lot of research with students that I was never originally trained for, and it often proves to be the most fun. All of our Seniors, and many of the underclassmen as well, get involved in research projects concerning environmental issues, particularly about water. A list of student projects is available to give a flavor of the things we’ve been doing.
