Why me and not you?

Factors that influence susceptibility to arsenic-related health effects.

Establishing a drinking water standard for arsenic that protects the public from any adverse health effect has been contentious because the health effects associated with chronic, low exposures are poorly understood. Unlike other carcinogens, arsenic does not cause cancer in traditional animal models. As a result, our understanding of the health affects associated with chronic arsenic exposure is dependent on epidemiological studies in exposed populations. As an environmental epidemiologist, Dr Molly Kile’s research has focused on understanding the health effects associated with chronic exposure to low level arsenic exposure and identifying factors that could explain why some individuals appear to be more susceptible to adverse health effects associated with chronic arsenic exposure. Her research takes her to Bangladesh where arsenic exposure from drinking water is common in rural communities that utilize shallow tubewells for gathering drinking water.

The Science Lecture Series is supported by the Larsen Fund.  The Larsen Fund was established in 1998 by Norwich Alumnus Tom Rogan (NU '65) in honor of Professor Emeritus Frederick D. Larsen, Dana Professor of Geology at NU (1956-2000).  The fund was set up to bring distinguished scholars, scientists, and lecturers to Norwich University to enrich the educational experience  and professional development of our students, faculty and staff.
