Nuts and Bolts

Final grades, final thoughts

Final course grades have been posted to Banner Web. You should be able to see them soon, depending upon when the registrar rolls them into their system.

Both sections had final exam averages in the low 70's, which is about the usual for this course over the years. A lot of people came through strong on the exam.

If you haven't done so already, please fill out the course evaluation in Banner Web.

I hope everyone has an excellent break. I look forward to seeing a lot of you in Calculus II in a couple of weeks.

Review session on!

It looks like we can have the review session as scheduled today at noon. I'll just leave here early and drive slowly.

If something happens on the way (or if I have to turn back because of the roads), I'll have the department secretary put up a sign.

See you at noon!

Friday review

This is a reminder that we have a review session scheduled for Friday, December 5th from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.

However ... there is a winter storm forecast for tonight and through most of the day tomorrow. I live 45 miles from campus. If the roads are bad, I will cancel Friday's session and announce Plan B. Most likely, that plan will consist of me coming early Sunday afternoon and being available for questions until dinner time. But I'll let you know for sure ...

Watch this space tomorrow morning.

Lab deadline extended

The deadline for handing in Lab #3 has been extended to 12:00 noon on Friday, December 12th.

Office hours/review session

Office hours for the Fall semester end on Tuesday, December 9th. I will be available by e-mail in general, but you can also stop in if my office door is open. You can also make an appointment, but those will be limited.

There will be a review session for the final exam on Friday, December 12th from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm in Tompkins 275.

Technical difficulties resolved

The technical difficulties plaguing this site have been fixed. Now I know what happens when you accidentally save files to the wrong directory.

Please let me know if you have any troubles getting to materials, and I apologize for inconveniencing you.

Lots of stuff this week ...

Lots of stuff is happening in MA121 during this last full week of class.

  • The solutions to Quiz #9 have been posted to the Exam and Quiz Solutions page..
  • Exam #4 happens this Friday, December 5th. It covers Section 4.11, all that we've done in Chapter 5, plus the area and volume stuff from Chapter 6.
  • Here are some practice problems for the exam.
  • One final project assignment, which will count for a lab grade. It is due on Tuesday, December 9th in class. It is a team assignment, either two or three people per team, no crossovers between sections.

I will talk about the final exam next week, after we get over this hurdle.

Falling behind ...

I owe both sections an apology because other deadlines -- having nothing to do with teaching classes -- have put me way behind in terms of grading and blogging. (The derivative on papers graded has been 0 ... didn't move even one through the system last night.)

You won't get your exams back until Thursday, but I will post the solutions Wednesday morning. I will also try to catch up on blogging tomorrow. Your labs will definitely be returned before the end of the semester.

We will finish up 5.1 and do some work on 5.2 on Wednesday.

Exam #3 this Friday

Exam #3 happens this Friday, November 7th. It covers Sections 4.1 through 4.6.

Here are practice problems for the exam. The usual 5 point offer is in effect.

Lab 2 deadline postponed

The due date for Lab 2 has been postponed until Wednesday, November 5th. For Monday's class, please bring your work thus far with you as I will leave some time to answer questions.

Missing classes this week

This week, the architects and engineers in class have field trips on Wednesday. In addition, we have a short week with many people leaving on Thursday.

Let me make the following clear:

  • There will be class held on Wednesday. I plan to proceed through the rest of 4.2 and 4.3, but you should check this space to see just how far we went.
  • If you go on the field trip, that doesn't automatically make you immune to the material covered that day. You are responsible for it and will be eventually quizzed and tested on it.
  • There will be class held on Thursday. I don't care if I'm "the only one of your professors who didn't cancel class Thursday." We will proceed through new material for which you will be held responsible.
  • If you are under threat of being dropped for missing too many classes, you definitely should be here Thursday.

Having said all that, I hope the field trips go well and that you get a lot of knowledge and enjoyment out of them.

Who doesn't love more HW?

I didn't give you any assignment on logarithmic differentiation out of 3.9. If you could try out problems 49, 51, 53, and 55 from 3.9, that'd be awesome. Thanks!

Midterm grades / Exam #2

Midterm grades were posted late last night. The registrar is supposed to "roll" the grades this morning so that they'll be visible to you.

Included in the midterm grades were:

  • All 5 quizzes you've taken.
  • Exam #1 including any bonus points.
  • Lab #1.

What was not included was Exam #2. I will grade that and return it to you on Wednesday. (The solutions will be posted by Tuesday at the latest.)

Additional HW on 3.7

In Section 3.7, I probably should've assigned problems in the range from 19 to 29. Some of those would be good to examine before Friday's test. (That's a hint ...)

Exam #2 this Friday!

Exam #2 happens this Friday, October 10th. It covers Sections 3.1 through 3.7 -- that is everything we've had on derivatives thus far.

Here are some practice problems for the exam. They are due on Friday at the exam, but I will post the solutions on Thursday.

Quiz #5 Solutions posted

The solutions to Quiz #5 are now posted in the Test and Quiz Solutions page.

Quiz #5 Friday!

On Friday, Quiz #5 happens. It covers all the derivative shortcuts to date: Power Rule, Product Rule, Quotient Rule, and Chain Rule, and all those rules about constants, addition, and subtraction. That was all in Sections 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5.

Study hard!

Lab day on Monday!

Both sections may report to the Cabot Computer Lab today to begin working on the introductory labs, available from the Computer Labs link above.

Exams to be returned on Wednesday

There are still some who haven't taken Exam #1 for various reasons. They are taking it Monday and you will get your exams back Wednesday.

I will post the solutions on Monday.

First hour exam, Friday 9/19

The first full-class exam will take place on Friday, September 19th. It will cover all we know about limits as well as some pre-calculus stuff -- Chapters 1 and 2. Stay tuned for more details.

Quiz #3 Thursday!

Quiz #3 happens Thursday, September 11th. It will consist of precisely one problem involving the formal definition of a limit. The rest will consist of evaluating some limits using the shortcuts, and limits involving infinity.

Calculator amnesty over!

This is a reminder that amnesty for a non-graphing calculator is over.

If you come to the quiz tomorrow with a graphing calculator, you will be asked to put it away. Make sure, if you need a calculator, that it is a non-graphing calculator.

Quiz #2 Friday!

Quiz #2 will happen during the last 20 minutes of class tomorrow. It covers Sections 1.7, 1.8 and 2.1.

Final exam time set

Our final exam has been set for Sunday, December 14th, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm in Dewey 309. The exam will be cumulative.

Section A in Cabot 295

Section A meets Thursday from 7:45 to 8:35 in Cabot 295.

We will be back in our usual room, Tompkins 275, on Friday morning.

Welcome to MA121!

On this blog, I will mostly summarize the day's main points. Sometimes, I'll expand on something we merely touched upon in class. Sometimes, I'll re-explain a concept a new way. Sometimes, I'll provide links to cool math content on the web. Lots of times I'll remind you of upcoming deadlines. Read More...
