Politeia Mission Statement

POLITEIA is an organization dedicated to promoting
interest in political affairs. This interest includes
and is not limited to: current research, an awareness
of professional opportunities, current social trends,
leadership within the Corps of Cadets and Traditional
lifestyle, and special programs. The activities of
this organization are intended to supplement and
enhance the regular program; neither supplant nor
interfere with it.

ARTICLE I: NAME & CHARTER

SECTION I: The name of this organization shall be POLITEIA, the Greek word for polity.

SECTION II: The Norwich University Department of History and Political Science, to which it remains responsible, create POLITEIA.

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE AND MISSION STATEMENT

POLITEIA is an organization dedicated to promoting interest in political affairs. The activities of this organization are intended to supplement and enhance the regular program; neither supplant nor interfere with it.

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP AND SUFFRAGE

Membership is open to any student at Norwich University. Suffrage is extended to all members.

ARTICLE IV: ELECTION OF OFFICERS

SECTION I: The officers shall be President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Student Activities Representative. The Vice President will serve as Acting President in the case of absence, dismissal or vacancy.

SECTION II: The tenure of all officers shall be one year.

SECTION III: The candidates for office will be nominated by fellow members, and upon a majority vote, will be elected.

SECTION IV: The general election of officers for the following year will occur at the end of the spring semester. Officers will assume their duties immediately.

ARTICLE V: DUTIES OF OFFICERS

SECTION I: The President shall be the chief executive officer who presides over all meetings and appoints necessary committees. The President may appoint officers to fill temporary vacancies caused by resignation or conditions set forth in SECTION VI, ARTICLE V.

SECTION II: The Vice President is the second-in-command of POLITEIA. The Vice President acts as the intermediary between the President and the three junior officers. In the case of absence or vacancy, the Vice President serves as Acting President.

SECTION III: The Secretary shall record and maintain proceedings, correspondence, updated membership lists, official documents, and any additional duties deemed necessary by the President. Informing members of meetings and other activities is also required.

SECTION IV: The Treasurer shall be responsible for the collection and disbursement of all funds related to the association, and any additional duties deemed necessary by the President.

SECTION V: The Student Activities Representative is the intermediary between POLITEIA and the Norwich Activities Council. This representative will keep both the club and council informed of the others’ plans.

SECTION VI:  Attendance of officers at regular meetings is mandatory. The position of an officer who fails to attend a meeting without just cause will be deemed vacant. In addition, should an officer discredit himself/herself or the club, his/her position will be deemed vacant.

SECTION VII: Disbursement of funds and planning of activities are to be authorized by the majority vote of the organization and pending approval of the faculty advisor.

ARTICLE VI: FACULTY ADVISOR

The Chairperson of the History & Political Science Department will appoint a member of the faculty to serve as the club’s advisor.

ARTICLE VII: MEETINGS

Regular meetings of POLITEIA shall be held on Wednesdays at lunch time during the academic year. Parliamentary procedure and the established rules of order will be how the meetings are conducted. Special meetings may be called at the discretion of the President, Faculty Advisor, or at the request of the Department.

ARTICLE VIII: AMENDMENTS AND RATIFICATION

Amendments to this Constitution will be accepted and ratified with a 2/3-majority vote. Anyone may present an amendment; discussion and debate will follow, according to the established rules.
