Mathematics Placement Exam Information

The Mathematics Placement Exam tests your ability to handle the concepts and skills needed for success in your first semester of college mathematics. The competence that you demonstrate on the exam will determine your placement level which, in turn, will determine the most appropriate math course for your first semester at Norwich.

The Placement Exam is an online exam and requires an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer (version 5 or higher) or Netscape Navigator (version 4.7 or higher). Your browser must have Javascript enabled.

The problems are multiple choice and there is no penalty for incorrect answers. You will need to use pencil and paper to work many, if not all, of the problems. You are NOT permitted to use a calculator. Depending upon your performance throughout the exam, there are up to 60 questions in a maximum time of 90 minutes.  Some of the problems were contributed by the Mathematical Association of America.

Please note that getting help on the exam is self-defeating. We use the exam to place you in an appropriate first year Mathematics course. Trying to score above your true capability will increase the likelihood of placement in a Mathematics course that is too difficult for you.

The navigation links to the left will let you look at many of the concepts covered in the exam, let you take a short sample exam, and let you take the actual exam. You will need to enter your Norwich ID number to access the actual exam.

If you are not able to take the exam online, you will be given an opportunity to take the test on the Norwich campus before you start classes in late August. At that time you will be given 90 minutes to take this exam and you will not be allowed to use a calculator.
