The Drive to Understand
Students in the EE 473 Electric Machines course need to understand the behavior of some interesting electrical circuits. Professor Robert Goodrich in Electrical Engineering and Brian Reid in Academic Computing have collaborated to develop an interactive animated illustration for a particularly challenging circuit. This web-based animation shows the sequence of operation of the switches in a two-pole DC-DC pulse width modulated (PWM) electric machine drive. The animation is combined with several exercise sets to encourage a full understanding of how the circuit works.
You can play with the motor drive animation at:

The folks in Academic Computing would love to help other faculty develop interactive materials to address teaching and learning challenges. Contact Gail Poitras, x2010, or email gail@norwich.edu to discuss your ideas.

Being Smart in Organic Chemistry
This semester Professor Roy Butler is experimenting with a Smart interactive whiteboard to facilitate guided inquiry group activities in his Organic Chemistry class. Cabot 283 is equipped with a SMART Board that Prof. Butler uses to display files and run chemistry applications from his laptop computer. He can illustrate important points and focus the groups attention by writing with electronic ink on the SMART Board just as he would on a chalkboard. He captures these class notes from the SMART Board, and saves them in his Webber2 folder. IndexWriter, a utility program designed by Brian Reid in Academic Computing, lets him create a simple web page index of the files making them readily available to students after class for review.
You can see his class notes index page created with IndexWriter at:

Student Presentations and Projects
Academic websites can be used for more than just posting syllabi and course information. Prof. Jacques Beneat uses his website to show student projects and presentations in a variety of formats including PowerPoint and video clips.
Find out what Prof. Jacques Beneat and his engineering students have been up to by visiting his website at: http://www2.norwich.edu/jbeneat/
View video clips of a robotics project that was part of the Norwich University - Saint Cyr Collaboration directly at: http://www2.norwich.edu/jbeneat/saint_cyr/index.html
Faculty, if you are interested in learning more about using video clips, please contact Gail Poitras at ext. 2010 or gail@norwich.edu.
DECEMBER 2003 SPOTLIGHT
Let the learning games begin!
Can playing games motivate students to learn? A growing body of research discussing how games can significantly enhance student learning has appeared in recent higher education publications and conferences. Here at Norwich, Prof. Ken Bush, communications, and Prof. Jan McCleery, Physical Education, are exploring the use of games in their courses. They worked with instructional technologists to develop their own digital versions of the well-known Jeopardy game show. Prof. Bush uses "Journalism Jeopardy" as an in-class activity to help students in the advanced journalism course review the coursework covered in beginning journalism. Prof. McCleery uses "Micronutrients Jeopardy" as an online self-study tool for students in PE 353 Foods and Nutrition.
Test your knowledge of beginning journalism by visiting "Journalism Jeopardy" at: http://www2.norwich.edu/bush/games/GAMES/GAME2/Jeopardy.html
Use Internet Explorer; click on dollar amounts to play.
The Academic Computing Team can help faculty who are interested in exploring the use of games for their courses. Contact Gail Poitras at ext. 2010 gail@norwich.edu.
